Our Proposal

The proposals seek to deliver a new Centre for Digital Health Technology (CDHT) consisting of research and development facilities comprising laboratories, offices and communal meeting spaces. The CDHT is one of the five innovation projects that underpin the Belfast Region City Deal (BRCD). It builds upon the university’s world class research capabilities and established track record in the arena of Medical Technology (MedTech) and Digital Healthcare Technology and has been developed by Ulster University (UU), in partnership with the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust (BHSCT). CDHT is a research-led, industry-facing project, developed in response to the identified strategic needs of the digital healthcare technology sector, which is projected to grow significantly in the years ahead, transforming healthcare and delivery systems.

The concept for CDHT has been developed based on extensive industry engagement and consultation with key stakeholders and partners, including clinicians and researchers. This will bring together in the new facility three leading research groups in the areas of:

  • Digital Healthcare

  • Technology Smart Environments

  • Biomolecular Sciences

Key Benefits of the CDHT

Delivery of a World-Class Education & Research Facility

The CDHT will bring together prominent research groups in digital healthcare, smart environments, and biomolecular sciences. This facility will support cutting-edge research and provide students and researchers with state-of-the-art labs and facilities, contributing to vital advancements in healthcare and technology education.

Sustainable & Environmentally Conscious Design

The CDHT design emphasises sustainable construction with a low-carbon footprint. The facility aims to incorporate recyclable materials, and energy-efficient technologies such as solar panels and mixed-mode ventilation. The proposed new building will achieve a BREEAM rating of excellent and will sit at a similar height to the current building.

Supporting Healthcare Transformation & Development

By focusing on digital healthcare and medical technology, the CDHT aims to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes. Collaborations with the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust demonstrate a strong alignment with local health needs, potentially leading to more effective healthcare solutions and a higher standard of patient care in Northern Ireland.
